If you are in need of a healthy snack, tamari almonds are the answer. They are salty, meaty and once you start eating them you will not be able to stop.
To make them all you need is un-roasted almonds and tamari. Un-roasted almonds can be purchased from any health food or bulk food store and are quite reasonably priced. Tamari is a Japanese soy-sauce with a dark complex flavour, it can be purchased in NZ from any supermarket and in the UK from a Japanese supermarket (or online).
Put the almonds in a bowl and add some tamari – you don’t need to drown them, just add enough tamari to give each almond an even coating. Leave them to soak for 10-20 minutes.
Pre-heat your oven to 140°C. Put the almonds into a large roasting pan and put in the oven for 30 minutes – turning every ten minutes or so. This is a rough guide, just keep an eye on the little beauties and take them out when they look like roast almonds (and smell like heaven).
They will be a little soft at first and harden up over time. Enjoy!
